Given its constant drive for innovation, in 2004 Northwave was the first cycling brand to use Gore-Tex® in its mountain bike and road bike shoes.

Since then the cooperation has grown and consolidated, so much so that today we can boast no less than 10 Northwave winter shoe models equipped with a Gore-Tex membrane. No other brand comes close.

First of all, what is Gore-Tex®? It is a synthetic fabric made of microporous Teflon and is designed to provide triple protection, being able to make the product in which it is applied waterproof, windproof and breathable. The Gore-Tex membrane is extremely thin and is made to prevent water from the outside and wind from penetrating, but at the same time allows sweat to escape. The collaboration of Gore-Tex® with Northwave therefore makes it possible to produce shoes of an extremely high quality level.

Why is a cycling shoe with a Gore-Tex membrane waterproof? The pores of the Gore-Tex membrane are extremely smaller than a drop of water, so it is impossible for rain to penetrate inside the shoe. At the same time, breathability is guaranteed by the fact that the pores of the Gore-Tex® fabric are larger than a molecule of water vapour, and consequently the sweat produced is able to escape from the shoe. Finally, the special structure of this material provides protection from the wind and prevents the foot from getting cold while cycling.

The Gore-Tex® membranes used in Northwave winter shoes are as follows:

  1. Duratherm Kelvin -> can guarantee the maximum thermal insulation of the Gore-Tex range, total protection from rain and wind, excellent breathability and a technical, high-performance fit. This is the Gore-Tex membrane used in the Flagship GTX, Extreme R GTX and Extreme XC GTX;
  2. Koala -> is a membrane that provides excellent thermal insulation, total protection from rain and wind, and is extremely breathable. It is present in the Celsius XC Arctic GTX, the X-Celsius Arctic GTX, the Celsius R Arctic GTX, the Kingrock Plus GTX and the Multicross Mid GTX;
  3. Pique -> provides good thermal insulation, is suitable for less severe winters, provides total protection from rain and wind, and is breathable. This is the membrane available in the Celsius XC GTX and Celsius R GTX.

The Flagship GTX is the top of the range for cross-country enthusiasts and professionals. It is a model created to celebrate 15 years of partnership between Northwave and Gore-Tex®, two brands that represent excellence in the study of solutions to combat rain, cold and wind. The talent of the Gore- Tex technicians and the designers of the Northwave Lab have been able to create a real synergy so as to succeed in creating a unique product that is difficult to imitate.

Whether they are XC shoes, Trail/All Mountain shoes or road shoes, Northwave offers different models for each of these disciplines to allow everyone to meet their own needs, depending both on economic availability and the technical and design characteristics of the Gore-Tex shoe.

New Gore-Tex® models are available in the new collection, namely the Kingrock Plus GTX and the Multicross Mid GTX. Both available in black and brown, the partnership with Gore-Tex is not the only one. Unlike Northwave's other winter shoes, which are made with Michelin soles, these two new models feature Vibram soles.

So if many might think that the only Gore-Tex® products were available for clothing, they will now have to think again. This fantastic technology can also be found in quality cycling footwear, such as Northwave products. If you have any further questions about Gore-Tex® cycling shoes, please contact us.

A TIP TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SOCKS

Choosing the right socks to wear with your Northwave shoes is crucial as much as the choice of the footwear. Highly padded socks tend to absorb the sweat produced by the foot, creating an uncomfortable sensation of moisture and wet. This is not related to the water resistance of the shoes. We recommend you to use only reduced thickness socks, which expel the moisture in order to facilitate the breathability of the feet, providing a pleasing feeling of comfort.
